Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Finland, UK. Six European countries in 2020 have registered a number of zero emission buses (battery-electric plus fuel cell buses) accounting for over 25% of the Class I registrations. Today unreachable, the Netherlands: 81 per cent of the city buses registered are zero emissions (445 out of 550), growing from the 66% of 2019. A year (2019) that has seen four countries overcoming the share of 25% ZE buses in the registrations book.

The figures have been collected by Chatrou CME Solutions, whereas the graphs is by Javier Ginés Sandoval Insausti.

In 2020, based on Chatrou CME Solutions data on bus registrations, the battery-electric bus market increased of 22% in Western Europe (with the addition of Poland). 2,062 e-buses (trolleybuses excluded) were registered between 1 January and 31 December 2020, vs the 1,685 that debuted in 2019 (that, it is worth remembering, it has been a truly record year with tripling figures on 2018). The average share of zero emission buses in the region is around 16% on the city bus market.

CNG buses growing in the intercity bus market

Another takeaway from the graphs is the following: the market for CNG buses is limited to a batch of countries where registration figures are quite high. Leaving apart Portugal due to the low number of city bus registrations, France, Spain and Sweden stand out for the deployment of CNG buses in city public transport. The same data provider Chatrou CME Solutions underlined that «Remarkable is the growth of CNG buses, especially in the Intercity and even the coach segment. Of the total of 2,636 CNG buses (from 2,199 in 2019), 413 were in these segments».
