Euro Bus Expo, the premier trade show for the coach and bus sector, returns to the NEC Birmingham on 12-14 November 2024.

The show’s free-to-attend Masterclass Theatre will serve as a dynamic platform for stakeholders to provide updates, present findings, share experiences, and explore solutions to industry challenges.

Brand new at Euro Bus Expo 2024

Presentation proposals are invited until 30 June, under eight programme themes. These include looking ahead, investing in our people, fleets of the future/sustainable travel, funding and finance, cities and transport, operations and compliance, back to basics, and innovation.

Organizers point out that “Presentations should help visiting operators to grasp changes in attitudes or upcoming trends, tackle a challenge in their business, improve a practice or process, learn about legislative or regulatory updates, or plan for a project or business development. They should aim to foster meaningful conversations and learning, and are to be shared in an educational, non-commercial, and non-self-promotional manner. Each proposal will be confidentially reviewed by a panel of operators and industry professionals, who will consider factors such as quality, originality, relevance, and interest to the audience. Proposals with overt commercial intent will not be considered for the Euro Bus Expo stage”.

Feedback and invitations to present or participate in alternative content-sharing opportunities will be provided by July 31, 2024.

Euro Bus Expo inviting presentation proposals

This year, for the first time, the organisers are inviting presentation proposals from the industry, encouraging all interested parties to be a part of the conversation, share their expertise, and influence the trajectory of the sector.

Says Helen Conway, Event Director: “Euro Bus Expo has always been the go-to platform for discovering what’s new and next in the coach and bus sector. This year, due to popular demand, we’re inviting speaker proposals to shape the show’s content. We strongly believe that diverse perspectives, on-the-ground experiences, shared best practices, and thought-provoking debates are crucial elements for an enriching experience. This is a unique opportunity for operators and suppliers to contribute to a community-driven event that leaves a lasting impact on the sector as a whole. This new approach to creating the programme reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive platform at Euro Bus Expo.”

The 14th edition of InnoTrans, the world’s leading trade show for transport technology and mobility from 24 to 27 September 2024 is attracting more exhibitors than ever. At the start of this InnoTrans year 99 per cent of the display area is already booked up, organizers say.

Covering a total of 200,000 square metres and featuring 42 halls, the rail track and outdoor display site as well as the Bus Display in the Summer Garden, the Berlin Exhibition Grounds are almost fully booked.

innoTrans is gaining increasing attention from the bus sector. In 2022, on the Bus Display exhibitors have been displaying their vehicles, alternative drive systems and the corresponding charging infrastructure.

InnoTrans 2024 will be more international than ever

InnoTrans states that international exhibitor numbers will break all records. Current bookings indicate that over 60 per cent of exhibitors are from abroad. Among them are 18 international transport companies such as Deutsche Bahn, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), China Railways, Polskie Koleje Państwowe (PKP), Turkish State Railways (TCDD), Etihad, SAR from Saudi Arabia, RTA from Dubai, Infrabel from Belgium, Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) and the Moroccan National Railways Office.

In addition, 16 international industry associations are showcasing the economic strength of the industry in their countries. Switzerland, Argentina, Korea, Spain, China, the UK, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Japan, Slovakia, Australia and Brazil are among those hosting combined stands. Ukraine will also be represented again with a combined stand at InnoTrans.

InnoTrans with a new focus on AI

The new AI Mobility Lab, announced in July 2023, will be featuring companies representing AI, robotics, cybersecurity and data protection for transport systems and, InnoTrans says, it is almost booked up. A few fully equipped turnkey stands are still available for companies interested in taking part. Exhibitors include Konux, the first AI scale-up offering genuine solutions for predictive maintenance, network capacity and traffic monitoring as well as planning for rail infrastructure management. Isarsoft is exhibiting an AI-based video analysis tool for planning, operations and security. Other exhibitors include DRAIVE GmbH, Nexterite, Tritem Microsystems GmbH, Ostirion and Engineering Ingegneria Informatica S.p.A.

Demonstration of electric buses at InnoTrans 2024

“We are pleased to be able to present exhibitors and trade visitors with eye-catching innovations at this year’s InnoTrans, an event that always has its finger on the pulse of the industry. Be it for new trains, live demonstrations of electric buses, AI, the Career Boost, world innovations or the first Railfluencer Festival, it is becoming more diverse, digital and sustainable. Once again, InnoTrans underlines its importance as the world’s largest trade fair for mobility of the future. We can hardly wait for it to start”, said Kerstin Schulz, director of InnoTrans.

London’s largest bus operator, Go-Ahead London, states it has delivered a saving of 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over ten years of operation of emission-free electric buses on behalf of Transport for London.

Go-Ahead London operates 520 zero emission buses on behalf of TfL and expects to increase this number to 1,000 by the end of 2026 – account for almost half the company’s fleet. According to plans, Go-Ahead’s entire fleet of 5,000 UK buses will be converted to zero emission vehicles by 2035. It’s just one of the pillars of the company’s strategy to reach carbon neutrality by 2045.

Go-Ahead London hosted a celebration at its Camberwell depot to mark the 10th anniversary of the operation of London’s first modern day emission-free bus, which was trialled on December 18th 2013.

London’s red buses are iconic and are some of the greenest in the world, with the lower CO2 emissions per passenger kilometres compared to other global cities like New York, Paris and Vancouver. With more than 1,300 zero emission buses on our roads, our programme of decarbonising the fleet is playing a crucial role in the journey to net-zero. Zero emission buses help Londoners breathe cleaner air and reduce the impact of road transport on our environment.

Tom Cunnington, TfL’s Head of Buses Business Development

Go-Ahead operates over 500 e-buses in London today

Across the UK as a whole, The Go-Ahead Group operates 670 zero emission buses and is shortly to deploy an additional 106 electric vehicles in Oxford, part funded by the Government’s ZEBRA scheme.

In 2022, a Zero Emission Centre for Excellence was opened in London by Go-Ahead to develop ways of optimising operation of zero emission buses – including maximising energy efficiency, standardising maintenance, bringing down the cost of charging infrastructure and extending the lifespan of batteries. The Centre found that 55% of customers would be more likely to travel by bus if they knew that a zero emission bus was available.

Go-Ahead, 10 years of e-buses and a look to the future

As part of the event, pictures were displayed of the ‘clean bus of the future’ drawn by pupils from local schools and guests were served with a zero emission bus themed birthday cake.

David Cutts, Managing Director, Go-Ahead London, said: “It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since our first electric bus hit the road. The technology has developed at a rapid pace and electric buses are rapidly become the norm, rather than the exception, on London’s streets. We’re proud to work in partnership with Transport for London to deliver cleaner air and quieter journeys for Londoners. The Go-Ahead Group as a whole has been able to take experience from London and apply it to the roll-out of zero emission buses across the UK.”

Zero emission buses help Londoners breathe cleaner air and reduce the impact of road transport on our environment. We’re really proud to be celebrating this milestone with Go-Ahead London who are marking 10 years of their emission-free electric bus services on our roads. We are working closely with capital’s bus operators to convert the whole fleet and remain on track to be a fully zero-emission fleet by 2034, which could be accelerated to 2030 with further Government funding.”

In an effort to draw public attention to the significant noise pollution in Vilnius and other European cities, Lithuanian manufacturer Altas Auto has launched the communication project “Prisoners of Noise”. By 2025 Altas aims to become fully electric, thus fully embracing the instances of the European Agenda 2030. The company launched a new electric midibus at Busworld Europe 2023, in cooperation with Zhongtong.

Altas Auto, a campaign with the focus on road noise

The company stresses that a recent survey revealed that 40% of Vilnius residents face excessive noise pollution, marking a concerning trend in European capitals. Noise, identified as the second major urban challenge in Europe, follows closely behind air pollution, impacting 30% of the EU population with long-term adverse effects, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Still according to the communication campaign by Altas Auto, WHO advises that the average road traffic noise in a city should not surpass 53 dBA, dropping to below 45 dB during the night to preserve normal sleep patterns. Alarming measurements conducted near Vilnius’ busiest streets revealed an excess of 20 dBA beyond WHO recommendations.

Outdated public transport buses, generating noise levels exceeding 80 dBA, particularly during stops, contribute significantly to the city’s noise. Educational institutions, kindergartens, and health care facilities, numbering 66, 106, and 21 respectively, fall within zones of abnormal noise, surpassing 65 dBA.

In 2022, the municipal entity “Vilnius plan” executed strategic noise mapping, exposing that 40% of the Vilnius agglomeration’s inhabitants, roughly 232,000 people, endure constant exposure to noise levels exceeding 55 dBA. This surpasses WHO’s recommended noise limits by 12 dBA.

Heavy vehicles, especially large buses, rarely exceed 50 km/h in the city. Especially outdated diesel engines, which still dominate public transport, make the most noise when shifting into the lowest gears, being the biggest source of systematic noise on city streets. To mitigate this, Vilnius city municipality is introducing various noise prevention projects, as well as aiming to improve public transport conditions and update the fleet by acquiring low-noise electric vehicles by 2028.

According to Edvardas Radzevičius, head of Altas Auto, the introduction of electric buses could revolutionize urban living by significantly reducing noise levels: “As a manufacturer of electric buses, we are well aware of the problem of noise in cities. Only after driving an EV bus can you understand what fundamental changes this transport will bring to our cities. Electric transport in residential areas allows to reduce the noise level several times. Not only residents win, but also municipalities with their hands untied to establish public transport stops closer to residential houses. From our perspective, the introduction of electric buses in densely populated urban areas, as well as in old towns, can fundamentally change the quality of life of the citizens”.

Preparations are in full swing for the fifteenth year of the FIAA 2024. The event is scheduled from 22 to 25 October 2024 in Madrid.

The fair is regarded as the key meeting for the sector in Southern Europe, organizers say, and “an upswing in activity has encouraged the organisers to raise their occupancy forecasts, resulting in the addition of a new pavilion. As a result, the event will now be held in pavilions 8 and 10 at Ifema Madrid”.

FIAA 2024 in Madrid will cover 2 pavillions

Furthermore, FIAA is dedicated to expanding its reach globally in the upcoming event by implementing strategies to draw principal buyers from outside Spain. All of this has been achieved through close collaboration with local associations of bus passenger transport companies in the relevant countries and the implementation of an ambitious programme of international buyers. This programme ensures that prominent clients attend, contributing to exhibitors’ access to foreign markets of great importance to the industry.

FIAA’s offer will be organised into the following categories: Full Vehicles; Framework; Bodywork; Elements, Accessories and Technology; Maintenance; Transportation Infrastructure; and Associations, Organisations and Services.

Alongside the exhibition space, the event will include a packed schedule of seminars, conferences, and other professional gatherings, creating a platform for scrutinising and contemplating the most recent sector improvements. This event will feature the customary Minibus of the Year Awards which acknowledge the research and development endeavours in this important subsector of the bus and coach industry.

Global Mobility Call to release a sustainable mobility report

The role of electrification and other alternative fuels in decarbonization, transportation multimodality, new infrastructures, together with innovation, digitalization and new technologies were some of the most mentioned topics, helping create a paradigm of a worldwide new mobility which shall be non-contaminant, safe, affordable and sustainable. The information provided by the speakers and the discussions in the congress areas will be compiled in the first GMC’s sustainable mobility report, which the experts from the Fraunhofer Institutewill produce in the coming weeks. The purpose of this document is to make the knowledge generated during the event available to all stakeholders.

Italy was the country partner for the event

For the first time, Global Mobility Call had a country partner for the event: Italy, through the Italian Agency for Foreign Trade (ICE), which promoted Italian SMEs and startups in an exhibition space of 80 m2, where twelve of these Italian companies were present to showcase the “Made in Italy” technologies and innovation in the different sectors of sustainable mobility.

Also this edition presented for the first time its Innowinner, Personality and Sustainable Stand awards, that recognise the best technological initiatives, the sustainability of exhibitors and outstanding professional careers in favour of sustainable mobility. The prizes awarded were Innowinner to the company Antolin; Personality to Trent Victor, and Sustainable Participation to the stand of the company Arriva.Among Spanish companies and institutional representatives, international keynote speakers (which represented 30% of total speakers) addressed worldwide mobility topics at the Main Auditorium. Bertrand Piccard, the first aeronaut to fly around the world in a solar plane without fuel, talked about existing solutions to tackle the environmental crisis in sectors such as mobility, energy, agriculture, waste, water and building, among others.

Multimodality in passenger transport was one of the themes of this edition of Global Mobility Call, where experts have opted, for its optimal development, for public-private collaboration. Participants urged taking into account the situation of urban and rural environments and also invited taking into account the role of micromobility for last mile trips beyond collective transport.

Electrification, driverless technology, innovation

The electrification of vehicles was another of the thematic areas very present in Global Mobility Call, and was shown as an indispensable way for the change towards sustainable mobility models, together with digitization and innovation. Different experts in electric mobility explained the urgency of achieving a reality with a greater presence of electric vehicles and of accelerating electrification in order to meet the objectives set by the European Union. Other alternative fuels such as hydrogen or biomethane were also mentioned as complementary ways to achieve clean mobility.

The GMC Expo hosted over 100 companies and startups presenting their innovative projects. The expo showcased a diverse array of sectors, including transportation, infrastructure, consumer goods, technology, and legal, each playing a pivotal role in the development of mobility solutions. At the exhibition area, the Mission H24 project exhibited its first hydrogen-electric prototype race car, the Le Mans Prototype Hydrogen (H2) Gaseous, and become one of the main attractions of the event. The car aims to showcase the potential of hydrogen both for the endurance circuit and for mobility in general.

Some other of the novelties in this area were a Formula E simulator, a guide robot for blind people in big spaces, or pedestrian safety solutions, amongst others.

Outside the pavilion, the Turkish company Karsan presented the Autonomous e-Atak, an autonomous electric bus that, for the first time in Europe, in Norway, successfully manages road traffic in whichever road conditions and without the need for driver intervention.

The very first of Busworld Digital Awards

For the first time, Busworld was organizing and awarding Digital Awards on Wednesday, October 11th within the Digital Mobility Solutions Conference, that also was a first at Busworld. Today, the world of buses and coaches cannot exist without all the digital solutions that contribute to be as safe, efficient and operational as possible.

Marc Vanhoutte, chairman of the Busworld Awards explains: “It was an absolutely necessary add-on to the existing Vehicle Awards and we received a lot of positive feedback on it. The signal was clear that Busworld has its eyes on the digital bus and coach transformation”.

Co-Chairman Thorsten Wagner, editor-in-chief of the German magazine ‘Bus Blickpunkt’ adds: “Digital is the future of bus and coach! It is absolutely fascinating what happens on the market and we loved to define the winners together with all the different expert jury members.”

The Digital Awards are divided into four different categories:

  1. Digital On-Board Comfort’ comprises everything from new entertainment systems to Human Machine Interface (HMI) Solutions, that makes the voyage experience for passengers as well as drivers more enjoyable and comfortable.

The winner was MAN Truck & Bus and their new Digital Cockpit with SmartSelect. Motivation: “The new Digital Cockpit from MAN is a clear step into the HMI-future. With its innovative ‘SmartSelect’ operation and the full integration of the new electric platform and the latest ADAS systems it helps the driver to concentrate on his/her job without irrelevant distraction”

Other nominees were: Actia for ‘ACTiVi solution’ and Navaho Technologies for their ‘Navaho Transport Systems’.

  1. ‘Digital Operational Excellence’ is very important to manage one’s fleet in a way that combines efficiency and sustainability with telematics and other systems, that cannot be omitted today by any means.

The winner was Iveco Bus with ‘IVECO ON Heavy Buses Digital Services’. Motivation: “The IVECO ON Digital Services for Heavy Buses meets the needs of most PTAs and PTOs in terms of proactive maintenance and downtime reduction with specialized KPIs and trends available on online reports, as well as remote diagnosis and programming. The protection against cyberattacks is another focus of the system. Multi-brand data management with the ‘agnostic’ telematics system is possible as well as the integration of third party apps, which was the biggest reason to vote for this all-encompassing telematics system”.

Other nominees were: TOTT UP for ‘GPS Training Partner’ and ZF Group for SCALAR.

  1. Digitally Enhanced Driving’ is all about partially and fully autonomous vehicles and all the sub technologies and tools it requires to be able to perform.

The winner was Karsan with the Autonomous e-ATAK. Motivation: “The Turkish OEM developed and produced the world’s first SAE-level 4 serial production autonomous bus. Together with the renowned partner ADASTEC, a software company, Karsan developed and implemented the software of the autonomous vehicle and the lidar and sensors applied on it together. The fully homologated midibus is already in operation since 2021 in the US and since 2022 in the EU (Norway), what makes it prizeworthy in a very tangible way. It could be test driven on the premises of Busworld Europe”

Other nominees were: Anadolu Isuzu for their ‘V2X’-System and Daimler Buses for ‘Active Drive Assist 2’.

  1. Last, but not least, the category ‘E-Mobility Management’ has been incorporated in the awards. Modern e-mobility is no longer about vehicles alone, but about whole systems to operate and charge a fleet of buses in a way that saves time and money.

The winner was ChargePoint/TWAICE for their ‘Battery Health Package’. Motivation: “ChargePoint and TWAICE as leaders in their fields of expertise teamed up to combine their unique strengths and bring a world’s first battery analytics solution that is seamlessly integrated in fleet management software to the market, independent from single OEM’s. TWAICE brought their expertise in battery analytics, building on top of ChargePoints Data Hub, and jointly integrating it into the ChargePoint system for maximum customer value. The all-encompassing and OEM-agnostic approach to an absolute focus topic in electromobility and battery safety convinced the jury to the full”

Other nominees were: MAN Truck & Bus for their ‘eManager’ software and Rampini for the hydrogen system ‘Hy4Drive’.
