130 vehicles (trolleybuses and e-buses) have just been awarded in Genoa, Italy. Solaris (in partnership with Skoda) will supply 112 IMC trolleybuses for a value of more than EUR 100 million.

The second part of the contract, dedicated to electric flash charging buses for the Valbisagno route, has seen the victory of Hess, which is committed to deliver the vehicles by October next year, for an amount of EUR 31 million.

Solaris and Hess win the Genoa tender

The tender was withdrawn in November for the electric bus lot due to concerns expressed by competitors about the timing and budget, as reported in the local press. With an increase of EUR 7 million and a shorter deadline, the companies Hess and Karsan came forward again to compete for the contract. The Swiss won the lot. Infrastructure partner? Hitachi Energy. In fact, the duo that fielded the Tosa system in Geneva and the Metrobus technology in Brisbane, Australia, is back.

The vehicles to be supplied by Solaris are IMC trolleybuses model Trollino 18. Candidates for the lot were, in addition to Solaris, Skoda and Van Hool.

Solaris will deliver 20 12-meter hydrogen buses to the Polish city of Wałbrzych. The contract includes an option to purchase an additional 25 vehicles. The first 14 units will be delivered to Wałbrzych in September 2024. The contract is to be completed by the end of July 2025.

The vehicles ordered will be the first ever hydrogen-powered vehicles to be deployed in the city. In Poland, hydrogen vehicles already successfully ply routes in the cities of Konin, Poznań and Lublin.

Solaris fuel cell bus for Wałbrzych

The Urbino 12 hydrogen model is fuelled solely with hydrogen converted to electricity in the fuel cell by Ballard. The fuel cell acts as a miniature power plant aboard the vehicle drawing fuel from hydrogen tanks located on the roof. The bus can cover at least 350 km with full tanks, Solaris says, and their refuelling takes about 10 minutes, depending on the infrastructure.

The 12-metre buses will feature 70 kW fuel cells that draw hydrogen from five tanks with a total capacity of 1,560 litres. The hydrogen-powered Solaris buses will also feature a relatively small Solaris High Power traction battery, to support the fuel cell when the demand for electricity increases. The drive unit will be a central electric motor.

The vehicles will offer 31 seats, including 10 with increased accessibility, i. e. without any additional steps. What is more, they will boast a bay for wheelchair-bound passengers and those with pushchairs or prams. The buses will refill with hydrogen at a hydrogen refuelling station located at a gas station on Warszawska Street in Poznan.

“Solaris is committed to creating more sustainable and environmentally friendly towns and cities. We are extremely proud that the city of Wałbrzych has chosen us as a partner to introduce hydrogen technology to its public transport. Hydrogen buses improve the quality of air in the city and, at the same time, they offer long ranges and superior travel comfort”, said Dariusz Michalak, CTO at Solaris Bus & Coach, who attended the contract signing.

Prague Transport Company and Škoda Group have introduced today the Škoda-Solaris 24m, the longest trolleybus in the Czech Republic.

Passengers using public transport to or from Václav Havel Airport Prague will soon be travelling on a long-awaited double-articulated, almost 25-metre-long battery-powered trolleybus Škoda-Solaris 24m. The vehicle has been presented at the Czechbus 2023 trade fair in Prague’s Letňany.

DPP has ordered in early 2022 20 of these vehicles for the Nádraží Veleslavín – Prague Airport line, which will change from bus line 119 to trolleybus line 59 after the electrification is completed.

As mentioned above, the Škoda-Solaris 24m will be the longest trolleybuses ever used in public transport in the Czech Republic.

Prague Transport Company has 13 other urban bus lines in various stages of project preparation and, in cooperation with the Central Bohemian Region, the first suburban bus line, which will gradually be converted to trolleybuses by 2030. After more than 50 years since the closure, we are indeed bringing trolleybuses back to Prague – a locally emission-free type of transport that has always belonged to the city’s hilly profile.

Zdeněk Hřib, 1st Deputy Mayor of the Capital City of Prague. for Transport and Chairman of the Prague Transport Company Supervisory Board

Skoda-Solaris 24-meter trolleybuses for Prague

The Prague Transport Company has ordered a total of 20 double-articulated trolleybuses Škoda-Solaris 24m from the consortium at a total cost of CZK 620 million (roughly 25,286,604 euro). The vehicle can accommodate up to 179 passengers, of which 54 are seated.

Height of the trolleybus is 3,500 mm (with collectors pulled down), with total maximum weight of 38,000 kg. The vehicle features a 60 kWh battery.

The five-door design will speed up passenger changes and allow for comfortable movement of passengers with luggage. There will also be a full-fledged check-in and information system with cashless ticketing and automatic passenger counting, air conditioning or a comprehensive monitoring system with cameras in the interior and exterior, which, among other things, will provide the driver with a sufficient overview of the situation around the vehicle. The Line 119 electrification project is part of the international project EBRT2030 under the Horizon Europe research programme.

Prague is bringing trolleybuses back in town

“We are really excited about the longest trolleybus produced. It’s not just another vehicle type and an expanded portfolio, it’s also a symbol of the change in the comfort and capacity of travel. We are confident that passengers will appreciate the news. And there is no need to worry either for the trolleybus drivers themselves or for those passing by. Despite its length, the double-articulated trolleybus handles very well, with steering and manoeuvring comparable to conventional articulated trolleybuses. Last but not least, we have the opportunity to participate in the reintroduction of trolleybus transport to the streets of Prague, which we are really pleased about. Škoda has been part of many historic moments and we appreciate the fact that we can once again be part of something so significant,” said Radek Svoboda, Managing Director Components & Bus Mobility at Škoda Group.

Replacing the existing buses with large capacity trolleybuses will increase the capacity of the line by at least 25 to 30%. This will increase comfort for passengers, who will also have more space for their luggage. Other positive effects, particularly for the environment, will be a saving of around 690,000 litres of diesel and a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 1,850 tonnes, both on an annual basis. The preferred forward-looking solution is, of course, to build a rail link to Prague Airport. Bus line 119 is only the second bus line after line 140 where we are preparing to introduce modern battery powered trolleybuses with a combination of operation partly under the trolley and partly on batteries. In addition to these, Prague Transport Company has 13 other urban bus lines in various stages of project preparation and, in cooperation with the Central Bohemian Region, the first suburban bus line, which will gradually be converted to trolleybuses by 2030. After more than 50 years since the closure, we are indeed bringing trolleybuses back to Prague – a locally emission-free type of transport that has always belonged to the city’s hilly profile. Currently, Prague has the smallest trolleybus network of any city in the Czech Republic that operates trolleybuses. If we manage to implement all the projects in progress, the trolleybus network in Prague will be almost 100 kilometres long and will probably be the longest in the Czech Republic,” says Zdeněk Hřib, 1st Deputy Mayor of the Capital City of Prague. for Transport and Chairman of the Prague Transport Company Supervisory Board.

“We are extremely pleased that everything is progressing on schedule with this electrification project. The construction of the infrastructure at the Řepy garage and the trolleybus line to Václav Havel Airport Prague is entering its final phase with completion scheduled for the end of February next year. Today we are presenting the first large-capacity trolleybus to the public, even a little ahead of schedule. I firmly believe that both the manufacturer and we will manage to obtain all the necessary permits so that we can launch it for the first time at the end of November and the beginning of December, on the already completed trolleybus line from Palmovka to Čakovice and Miškovice, and thus begin the first stage of the vehicle’s homologation. First without passengers, in which it is necessary to drive 5 thousand kilometres. After reaching this milestone, the first passengers will be able to ride the vehicle. The second stage of homologation, i.e., operation of the vehicle with passengers, in which up to 15,000 kilometres must be driven, will begin. To achieve this, we expect to deploy a second vehicle in January. If everything goes according to plan, we should take delivery of all 20 trolleybuses in mid-February and then start operating them on line 59 to the airport in March 2024,” adds Petr Witowski, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Prague Transport Company.

prague skoda solaris 24 meter

Jiří Pos, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague Airport, is very supportive of the trolleybus connection between the airport terminals and the city centre: “It will increase comfort for passengers and all employees. At the same time, I must appreciate that the concept fits in with our ESG strategy. Reducing emissions and noise at the airport and its surroundings is our long-term goal and we are trying to involve our airport partners, which Prague Transport Company undoubtedly is. However, the ideal transport connection from the airport to the city centre and back will be a rail link.”

Webasto: High-Voltage Heaters for e-buses

busworld europe 2023 brussels

“Whether in electric minibuses or city buses – Webasto’s High-Voltage Heaters (HVH) convert electrical energy into heat at an efficiency close to 100 percent”, the company claims. At the Busworld Europe exhibition the company is exhibiting the latest members of its HVH family that deliver 10 and 12 kilowatts (kW) of heat output respectively. These are the second generation models of the world’s first 800-volt heater to enter series production.

Together with the new CoolTop 80-e (CT 80-e) electric rooftop air-conditioner, the heating and cooling units form the basis for feel-good temperatures all year round – from the driver’s cab to the passenger cabin. In conjunction with the intelligent Cronus Smart control unit, Webasto also combines various components from its heating and air-conditioning technology portfolio to create the centrally controllable electric Thermal Management (eTM) system, which keeps both the traction batteries and the passenger cabin at the ideal operating temperature.

Yutong U18 at Busworld Europe in Brussels

Yutong will be at the fair with four models, including some interesting innovations. In particular, Yutong will present the articulated version of the U18, being the U12 the e-bus developed for the European market already presented at Busworld 2019… and never put into service. But sources close to the Chinese group say the time has now come. The U18 will take its place in the spotlight at the Brussels show alongside the U11 double-decker, headed to the British market.

Closing the circle, an extra short (the seven-metre E7) and the three-axle battery-powered coach T15E, ready to preside over a segment, that of the zero-emission coach, which is still embryonic.

ZF: CeTrax 2 in the spotlight at Busworld

The world-premiere of ZF’s latest electric mobility low-floor solution for city buses will take place in Brussels at Busworld Europe 2023. It’ll go along with the exhibition of CeTrax 2 dual electric central drive for electric buses and coaches (also on display at UITP Summit): it offers a cont. power of 380 kW, features an integrated three-speed transmission making tackling steeper slopes easier and higher cruising speeds more efficient.

ZF mentions that at Busworld it’ll be held the “World-premiere of electric portal axle”. This should refer to the presentation of the AxTrax 2, whose series production is planned to begin in Europe in late 2024 and in the U.S. in 2025, as stated by ZF at ACT Expo earlier this year. It will be offered in two variantsAxTrax 2 with one e-drive and AxTrax 2 dual with two integrated e-drives, being the latter a real news in ZF offer (and a rarity in the e-bus segment, with just Volvo Buses so far mounting on the 7900 Electric a 2-drive transmission).

Eight new trolleybuses (Solaris Trollino 12 with Kiepe Electric equipment) presented today, another 25 buses set to arrive by the end of the year and a batch of e-buses (the first for the city) to be delivered in 2024 (again Solaris, from central body Consip). These are the stages followerd by TEP Parma‘s fleet renewal.

The purchase of the new trolleybuses required an investment of EUR 5.2 million, entirely financed by the Ministry of the Environment’s National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Mobility.

Today Parma is the 5th largest Italian city in terms of trolleybus fleet, behind the large cities of Milan, Naples, Bologna and Rome. The network, inaugurated on 25 October 1953, will be 70 years old in 2023 and continues to play a fundamental role in the city mobility.

TEP has completed renewal of trolleybus fleet

The presentation of the new trolleybuses was held today, 21 September. From tomorrow they will be in service on lines 3 and 4, on the city’s east-west axis. The municipal operator TEP thus completes the renewal of the trolleybus fleet begun in 2014.

The new trolleybuses presented in Parma are manufactured by Solaris, model Trollino, equipped by Kiepe Electric, 12 metres long and with full-electric power supply. The electricity supplied by the trolleybus network, in fact, also powers the on-board battery (based on LTO formula), which gives the trolleybus enough zero-emission range to run along the parts of routes not covered by overhead lines (about 45 per cent of the journey).

The capacity of the new trolleybuses is 85 passengers, 21 of whom are seated. There is a seat for mobility-impaired passengers and a separate seat for children in prams. The floor is entirely lowered, with no internal steps.

After the new trolleybuses, the first pure electric buses will arrive in Parma in 2024, initially for line 8 and then lines 2 and 9. Within a few years, therefore, the lines with routes entirely within the urban area will be equipped with electric vehicles or trolleybuses, with the exception of line 15, which already uses an ultra-low emission ‘eco-smart’ bus.

BYD, Iveco Bus, Industria Italiana Autobus, Solaris: four bidders for the 340-units electric bus tender issued by ATM Milano in November 2022. The news is reported on Italian trade media Autobusweb.

As of summer 2022, there were some 170 electric buses in operation in Milan, with the target of reaching 250 by end 2022. All of them carry Solaris‘ logo: the Polish manufacturer was awarded a first contract for 25 vehicles and won second order for 250 units in July 2019.

Milan tender electric buses: 340 vehicles up for grabs

It is worth mentioning the absence of groups such as Daimler Buses, MAN and Irizar. Karsan, which has recently entered the market aggressively, also did not presented bid. VDL, fresh from launching its new Citea range, and a plethora of exotic manufacturers chose to stay away from a tender with several challenging requirements.

Nothing has been leaked about specific offers, especially about which of the three lots the manufacturers have targeted. In principle, Iveco Bus and Solaris will face each other on both sizes (12 and 18 meters), while IIA may have targeted only the 12 meters, only because the 18 meter has not yet been seen in circulation. BYD? Anything can happen beyond the Great Wall. Although here in Italy, the articulated BYD buses are today zero.

ATM Milano, a recap of the three lots

The first lot consists on the supply of 205 battery-electric buses, approximately 12 metres long, in a 3 double-door configuration, including full-service maintenance. Estimated value (excluding VAT) of EUR 183,022,012.37. The duration of the contract, which is non-renewable, is 202 months.

The second lot is also non-renewable, but has a slightly shorter framework agreement duration (199 months). It consists of the supply of 105 electric, battery-powered buses of approximately 18 metres, in a 4 double-door configuration, including full-service maintenance. Estimated amount, excluding VAT: EUR 125,761,274.63.

Finally, the third, with a duration of 3 years non-renewable and a value of 21 million euro. This is a three-year framework agreement for the supply of up to 30 e-buses for city service of about 12 metres, in 2-door and 3-door configuration with a minimum guarantee of 2 years on the entire vehicle.

Representatives from the city of Łódź, in Poland, have signed a contract with Solaris to supply 8 e-buses along with the charging infrastructure. The zero-emission Urbino 18 electric vehicles will hit the streets of the city in second half of 2023. This is the first contract for electric buses to be carried out for Łódź by the manufacturer from Bolechowo. The contract is worth nearly PLN 32 million gross.

This is not the city’s first investment in Solaris vehicles with alternative drive systems. This year, the manufacturer has already delivered 29 low-emission Urbino 12 mild hybrid buses to the city. Soon, another 20 units of the same type will make their way to Łódź.

Solaris articulated e-buses in Łódź

Thanks to the appropriate configuration of batteries and charging infrastructure, the Urbino electric buses in question will be able to operate up to 24 hours a day, Solaris says.

The new e-buses will be powered by High Energy batteries with a total nominal capacity of over 400 kWh. They will be charged both via a plug-in connection, with a socket placed on the front bonnet panel of the vehicle, and by means of an inverted pantograph, lowered from the charging mast onto special rails mounted on the bus roof. Buses feature electric central traction motor.

The interior of the Urbino 18 electric vehicles, equipped with fully automated air-conditioning for the whole vehicle, will offer space for at least 110 people, including 35 seated. The buses will also feature a variety of amenities and modern solutions, such as an electronic ticketing system that allows payment by credit card, a ticket vending machine, and a passenger information system with a self-adaptive volume feature that allows the volume of the announcements played inside the vehicle to adapt to the ambient noise level.

In order to make the most of the potential of the electric fleet, the vehicles will also be delivered with diagnostic system eSConnect. With such information as the battery charging status, data on the bus’s expected range, or on the current or total electricity demand, the operator can optimise the operation of its fleet. Thus, eSConnect makes it possible to increase vehicle availability, reduce bus downtime and avoid unnecessary return drives to the depot.

“The signing of the contract for 8 state-of-the-art electric buses is an event of enormous importance for us. We are pleased that Łódź will be yet another city on the electric map of zero-emission Solaris buses. We are also very proud to be able to support the city in the implementation of such ambitious undertakings. These determined efforts to electrify public transport in Łódź will set an excellent example for numerous European towns and cities”, underlined Krzysztof Musiał, Regional Sales Manager for Poland South-East at Solaris.

“It’s great news for the bus fleet in Łódź, which will be enriched by the addition of these new e-buses. Today, we are signing a contract for the purchase of our first articulated e-buses manufactured by Solaris. I am extremely happy about it and strongly believe that this is only the beginning of our long-term collaboration”, said Adam Pustelnik, First Deputy Mayor of the city of Łódź.

Solaris will deliver four Urbino 12 hydrogen buses to Venice. The contracts were concluded with Italian carriers AVM Venezia and ACTV SPA Venezia. The 12-metre hydrogen-fuelled buses will arrive in Italy in mid-2023, and the total value of the contracts exceeds €2.5m.

The first fuel cell bus fleet with Solaris’ brand was launched in Bolzano, Italy, in May 2021 (the delivery of the 12 vehicles followed the very first order ever secured by Solaris for its fuel cell bus, signed in June 2019 just a few days after the world premiere at UITP Summit in Stockholm). Largest order so far? 20 models commissioned in the Netherlands by Connexxion, which also belongs to Transdev group.

Solaris fuel cell bus units destined for Venice are yet another batch of vehicles producing no local emissions that will serve the residents of this region. In 2020, under a contract concluded with ACTV SPA Venezia, Solaris delivered 30 Urbino 12 electric vehicles to the city along with charging infrastructure. They have been deployed to exclusively provide public transport in two city districts located on the islands in the Venetian Lagoon: Lido and Pellestrina.

Fuel cell buses for Venice

Solaris has landed another order for the delivery of zero-emission vehicles to Italy. The Urbino 12 hydrogen buses will serve the residents of Venice and its surroundings thanks to contracts signed with carriers AVM Venezia and ACTV SPA Venezia, which provide public transport services in Venice as well as within the communes of Venice and Chioggia. The deliveries are slated for the end of the second quarter of 2023, and the value of the contracts exceeds €2.5m.

The Urbino 12 hydrogen bus is a low-floor vehicle, generating no local emissions. At the heart of the bus lies a 70 kW hydrogen fuel cell that acts as a miniature hydrogen power plant aboard the vehicle.

These 12-metre hydrogen buses, with a 2-2-2 door arrangement, feature air conditioning with a heat pump as well as USB ports for passengers located on the vehicle’s walls. The driver will also be supported by MobilEye Shield+. This is a modern system which alerts the driver every time an unexpected object is detected in the vicinity of the bus. The vehicles will also feature a passenger counting system. Continuous servicing of the vehicles will be provided by eSConnect, a bus fleet monitoring and management system designed by Solaris.
