Iveco Bus has won its largest electric bus contract in Italy to date for the supply of 411 battery electric vehicles to the capital’s public transport operator ATAC.

The manufacturer has also won 153 e-buses in Milan and 225 in Turin.

The contract, signed today 17th January 2024, is worth more than 300 million euros. The tender comprises not only the new electric buses, measuring either 12 or 18 metres in length, but also a 10-year full-service maintenance plan for each.

Iveco Bus to deliver +400 e-buses in Rome

The delivery of the first batch of 110 e-buses will start in the last quarter of 2024 with all remaining buses to be delivered by April 2026.

Both 12-m and 18-m long vehicles will be equipped with the latest NMC battery technology with a single-unit capacity of 69.3 kWh. This energy storage package is assembled at the new FPT Industrial battery plant (e-plant) in Turin. The vehicles, which feature the manufacturer’s latest ADAS devices, will comply with the GSR (General Safety Regulation).

The full-service maintenance will be performed by Romana Diesel, Iveco’s Dealer covering the Lazio region and one of the manufacturer’s biggest official dealers in Europe. Romana Diesel employs 350 people and will deliver service support at its workshop and on-site, to ensure full vehicle availability for the customer and passengers for the entire duration of the contract.

Domenico Nucera, President, Bus Business Unit, Iveco Group, stated: “We are extremely proud to be a key contributor to Rome’s transition towards greener and more efficient mobility. Our increasingly strong offering in the field of electric passenger transport is being recognised across the entire Italian market, and internationally as well, confirming our position as a leading partner. Extending this to the capital of Italy, the ‘Eternal City’, is a fitting way to begin 2024, after closing a very satisfying year in terms of orders for Iveco Bus”.

Giorgio Zino, Head of IVECO BUS Europe Commercial Operations said: “We are extremely proud that ATAC Rome have placed their trust in us with this impressive order. Our E-Way buses benefit from state-of-the-art solutions to provide drivers and passengers with a comfortable and emission-free journey. Iveco Bus will supply 153 electric buses to Atm Milan. The manufacturer has in fact won the 12-metre lot in the €120 million tender launched by Milan’s public transport company, on the strength of an industrial plan to electrify the entire fleet of 1,200 buses by 2030. By 2026, half the fleet will be zero-emission.

We had anticipated the news of the award at the beginning of August. Today the official announcement has arrived, ratified by an Iveco Bus press release.

The Milan award crowns a year that has seen Iveco Bus win important battery-powered tenders, GTT Torino above all.

Iveco, electric buses for Atm Milan

The contract for the new buses includes 153 new 12-metre electric buses and their full service maintenance for ten years. The first deliveries are scheduled by the first quarter of 2025, and all remaining buses will be delivered by June 2026.

Iveco Bus has put its seal on an important tender that allows it to break the monopoly hitherto held by Solaris on the ‘electric’ chapter (Solaris, in any case, won the 18-metre lot….). The Turin-based company points out that today vehicles with the Iveco Bus logo make up 45 per cent of the ATM fleet (550 buses out of 1,200).

Domenico Nucera, President, Bus Business Unit, Iveco Group, commented: “We are proud to play an important role in Milan’s journey towards more sustainable mobility. The competitive total cost of ownership offering of IVECO BUS, combined with our close proximity to ATM, allows us to provide a tailored solution that meets the specific needs of this fast-paced city.”

Iveco Bus Crossway range has broken a new production record as the 60,000th unit rolled off the assembly line since its launch in 2006.

Manufacturing, as widely known, takes place at the Vysoke Myto plant (Czech Republic), one of the largest facility in Czech Republic and Eastern Europe, and Europe’s largest bus manufacturing plant.

Iveco Bus Crossway range growing

Today the Crossway is available in multiple variants (10.8, 12, 13 and 14.5 m), and with wide choice of energy (biogas, hybrid, electric). Iveco Bus raised the curtain on the new Crossway range (with facelift and addition of the Elec Low Entry version, already showcased at UITP Summit) on 6 October at Busworld.

For Europe’s best-selling Class II (more than 4 thousand units a year, 2 thousand of which Low Entry – and growing), this is no mere makeover but a true Copernican revolution, which affects every detail of the bus starting with the new logo, unveiled at the trade fair.

The Crossway range has also received prestigious awards, including the “International Bus & Coach Award 2017” and four Sustainable Bus of the Year awards in the Intercity category: the “SBY 2018” title with the Low Entry gas version, “SBY 2020” with the Natural Gas version, “SBY 2023” with the Biomethane-compatible Low Entry Hybrid Gas version and, most recently, the Crossway Low Entry ELEC model was crowned “SBY 2024”.

“With this new record of 60,000 units produced, our Crossway confirms its leading position in the Intercity segment. With its extensive choice of configurations and multiple available alternative energies, the Crossway range is uniquely capable of meeting the specific requirements of a wide variety of  transport operations. This accounts for its continued success as the best-selling intercity bus in Europe and its appeal in markets on other continents,” says Stéphane Espinasse, Head of Iveco Bus Sales  Operations and Product Management.

Webasto: High-Voltage Heaters for e-buses

busworld europe 2023 brussels

“Whether in electric minibuses or city buses – Webasto’s High-Voltage Heaters (HVH) convert electrical energy into heat at an efficiency close to 100 percent”, the company claims. At the Busworld Europe exhibition the company is exhibiting the latest members of its HVH family that deliver 10 and 12 kilowatts (kW) of heat output respectively. These are the second generation models of the world’s first 800-volt heater to enter series production.

Together with the new CoolTop 80-e (CT 80-e) electric rooftop air-conditioner, the heating and cooling units form the basis for feel-good temperatures all year round – from the driver’s cab to the passenger cabin. In conjunction with the intelligent Cronus Smart control unit, Webasto also combines various components from its heating and air-conditioning technology portfolio to create the centrally controllable electric Thermal Management (eTM) system, which keeps both the traction batteries and the passenger cabin at the ideal operating temperature.

Yutong U18 at Busworld Europe in Brussels

Yutong will be at the fair with four models, including some interesting innovations. In particular, Yutong will present the articulated version of the U18, being the U12 the e-bus developed for the European market already presented at Busworld 2019… and never put into service. But sources close to the Chinese group say the time has now come. The U18 will take its place in the spotlight at the Brussels show alongside the U11 double-decker, headed to the British market.

Closing the circle, an extra short (the seven-metre E7) and the three-axle battery-powered coach T15E, ready to preside over a segment, that of the zero-emission coach, which is still embryonic.

ZF: CeTrax 2 in the spotlight at Busworld

The world-premiere of ZF’s latest electric mobility low-floor solution for city buses will take place in Brussels at Busworld Europe 2023. It’ll go along with the exhibition of CeTrax 2 dual electric central drive for electric buses and coaches (also on display at UITP Summit): it offers a cont. power of 380 kW, features an integrated three-speed transmission making tackling steeper slopes easier and higher cruising speeds more efficient.

ZF mentions that at Busworld it’ll be held the “World-premiere of electric portal axle”. This should refer to the presentation of the AxTrax 2, whose series production is planned to begin in Europe in late 2024 and in the U.S. in 2025, as stated by ZF at ACT Expo earlier this year. It will be offered in two variantsAxTrax 2 with one e-drive and AxTrax 2 dual with two integrated e-drives, being the latter a real news in ZF offer (and a rarity in the e-bus segment, with just Volvo Buses so far mounting on the 7900 Electric a 2-drive transmission).

These buses in the coming years will radically change the face of public transport in Turin and will allow a total renewal of the fleet: 63% of GTT’s buses will be electric and thanks also to the strengthening of the tram and metro system, more than 80% of travellers in Turin will move electrically and therefore without polluting.”

“We are proud to have been selected by GTT for Turin – says Domenico Nucera, President, Bus Business Unit, Iveco Group -. First and foremost we have demonstrated the competitiveness of our product against the best competition, in the wake of the successes already achieved at international level. Furthermore, this supply for GTT will be the first example in Europe of a ‘turnkey’ contract of our electric buses: not only the vehicles, but also charging services and spare parts, through a winning teamwork with Enel X and IVECO Orecchia. Finally, of course, it fills us with pride to know that the city that hosts the headquarters of Iveco Group will see the most modern electric buses produced by our company”.

“We are very pleased to be able to participate in such an important project for the city of Turin, further promoting the spread of sustainable transport in our country – says Armando Fiumara, Head of E-Bus Italia at Enel X -. We are confident that transport on silent and less polluting vehicles will be even more even more preferable by citizens and visitors, in order to respond concretely not only to the objectives of reducing the environmental impact environmental impact, but also to improving urban mobility.

Iveco Bus is set to launch the electric Daily in the Latin American market. The brand is approaching its entry in the e-mobility landscape of the region with a offer that will go along with a ‘turnkey solution’ approach (and with a localization process of the product).

Gauthier Ricord, Public Tenders & Product Management representative at Iveco Bus, outlined the company’s strategy during a recent VideoSpotlight event organized by Sustainable Bus. With a focus on local adaptation, extensive product offerings, and a holistic approach to addressing challenges, Iveco Bus aims to establish itself as a leader in providing electric mass transit solutions throughout Latin America.

Iveco Bus in Latin America: electric Daily at first

“As of today, we are already present in Latin America since many years with a manufacturing footprint, offering gas and diesel vehicles, and we will continue to pursue this offering along with electromobility – stated Ricord -. Our first major step will be the introduction of the Daily electric in Latin America for local operators, based on the van and on the chassis-derived version. This will be the most important step in the coming months”.

And the 12-meter is coming: “We have already showcased in the region the 12-meter E-Way manufactured in Europe. It is a high-quality, high-end product that can be suitable for certain missions and operators in Latin America. We have conducted demonstrations in Brazil, Uruguay, and other countries, and we plan to demonstrate this vehicle in more places” (the picture refers indeed to one of the demonstrations held in LATAM).

Localization of product will follow

Ricord continued: “The key point for Latin America is to achieve a perfect match between the country’s challenges, regulations, and operators, ensuring the product is well-suited to the market. This will go through a localization of the product by leveraging the technology bricks and know-how that we have already established in our lineup. This will enable us to develop a product that perfectly addresses the local challenges. This localization process will be our next step in adapting our offering to the market.

Challenges and opportunities of Latin American market? “We see a big potential in the region, therefore it’s definitely in our radar to be there and to propose our products and services. Probability we’ll adopt a more extended approach including the full offering: chargers, infrastructural works and also, probably, financing, as we know this is a big challenge in the area. There are a lot of opportunities but also challenges are huge: readiness of grid, of infrastructure, of network. Our way to approach the region is the following: to pursue the opportunities but also addressing the challenges, offering a full turnkey solution for operators“, concluded Ricord during Sustainable Bus’ VideoSpotlight.

CNG, diesel, but also battery-electric. New add in the Iveco Bus Streetway range, the latest bus family launched by Iveco Bus (it was 2021) with focus on Europe and besides Europe (Africa, Middle East, Asia). The Streetway Elec joins the gas-powered and conventional versions of the range manufactured, in the framework of the cooperation between Iveco Bus and Otokar, in the Turkish plant of Sakarya.

It’s one of the main novelties from the electromobility-focused event held in Paris where electric versions of Crossway LE and Daily have been unveiled. Also the battery-electric city bus E-Way has been presented in a ‘new generation’ version.

Iveco Bus Streetway Elec, with Voith motor

The Iveco Bus Streetway Elec is a low-floor city bus available in the 12-meter version. It is equipped with a 310 kW Voith electric motor and, like the rest of the Iveco Bus electric range, integrates the new generation NMC lithium-ion batteries assembled by FPT. The cooperation with Voith is a real news for Iveco Bus, but on the other hand it’s no surprise as the German supplier has been already contracted by Otokar as motor supplier for the e-Kent C range.

A modular approach to energy storage offers on the Streetway Elec various combinations consisting of five, six, or seven battery packs distributed between the roof and the rear of the vehicle, for a total capacity of 346, 416, or 485 kWh respectively. The extended battery capacity offers a range of up to 400 km, Iveco Bus says.

The vehicle is designed for daytime use and overnight storage charging with a Combo 2 CCS connector. No pantograph options available, then. The Streetway Elec is available with two or three access doors and can accommodate over 90 passengers. Accessibility has also been improved with a new five-seat area in the rear.
