ADL welcomes ScotZEB funding for 137 Scottish-built zero emission buses. The Scottish Government’s has indeed announced the award of £62 million in funding to bus operators through Phase 1 of the Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund (“ScotZEB”). The plan was announced in summer 2021.

Successful proposals for 137 zero-emission buses were made with ADL as the intended supplier and the company will now work with the awardees to finalise contracts for these electric buses, which will be built by ADL in Falkirk.

ADL awarded 137 electric buses within ScotZEB fundings

ScotZEB follows two rounds of funding under the predecessor Scottish Ultra-Low Emission Bus Scheme in September 2020 and March 2021, which enabled 207 electric buses to be ordered from ADL by bus operators.

The aim of ScotZEB is to encourage significant change in the bus market in favour of zero-emission technologies, creating sustainable and inclusive growth, ADL underlines. By supporting the swift transition to zero emission vehicles and infrastructure, the fund aims to help achieve targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contribute to the delivery of Low Emission Zones, encourage inward investment and growth in the supply chain of zero carbon vehicle and energy solutions in Scotland, with associated employment, economic and social benefits.

As mentioned above, the NFI-owned company says that«Successful proposals for 137 zero-emission buses were made with ADL as the intended supplier and the company will now work with the awardees to finalise contracts for these electric buses, which will be built by ADL in Falkirk. They will help to underpin skilled jobs as well as the company’s apprenticeship and graduate programmes. ADL is also working to upskill its team in green technology and continues to invest in the future of its team members through professional development opportunities».

ADL President & Managing Director Paul Davies commented: “The Scottish Government continues to lead by example with its support for the bus industry, and the ScotZEB challenge fund supports our collaborative business model of working in close partnership with operators, infrastructure partners and stakeholders. We are pleased that bids for 137 of our zero emission buses have been successful in this phase.

Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and BYD UK will supply over 130 zero emission double deck buses to EV fleet and battery storage specialist Zenobē and bus operator National Express, and support these vehicles with spare parts over a period of 16 years. The buses are part of a £140 million project to make Coventry the UK’s first all-electric bus city. The number of vehicles set to debut in the city was already known , now the name of supplier has been public.

ADL BYD to provide 130 double decker e-buses in Coventry

The deal will see over 130 BYD ADL Enviro400EV double deck electric buses, all manufactured in Britain by ADL in partnership with BYD, enter service in Coventry from early 2023 as a part of the city’s successful bid to become the country’s first all-electric bus city and take it a huge step closer to replacing around 300 diesel vehicles by 2025.

Zenobē is a UK market leader in EV fleets and battery storage, with 175MW of operational and contracted storage assets and 394 EV buses or an estimated 25 per cent market share of the UK operational EV bus sector and has recently established a multi-source debt structure of £241 million to radically accelerate the expansion of the EV fleet sector

In this case Zenobē will be providing Electric Transportation as a Service (ETaaS) to National Express, financing and managing the full turnkey solution that includes new BYD ADL vehicles, on-board battery replacement, charging and grid infrastructure, a second life battery system at the depot, unique software to optimise charging, parts, and full operational support.

Zenobe Energy to finance and manage the e-buses

As part of the agreement, as mentioned above, ADL will supply Zenobē and National Express with spare parts for planned preventive maintenance (PPM) over a period of 16 years from acceptance of the vehicles.

The work builds on ADL and Zenobē’s existing work with National Express, previously providing charging infrastructure and batteries for 29 BYD ADL Enviro400EV electric buses in Coventry and Birmingham in 2020. The project will be financed partly through the partnership between Zenobē and National Express, with some investment also coming from a £50 million grant from the Department of Transport, awarded to the West Midlands Combined Authority for Coventry’s all-electric bus city scheme, enabling the public purse to go further.

An innovative funding model

Paul Davies, ADL President and Managing Director, said: “As the UK’s leading provider of electric buses, we are delighted to be part of this ETaaS deal with partners Zenobē and National Express. This innovative model brings together government funding and business innovation to deliver an affordable way of rolling out zero emission bus fleets at scale.

“The country will further benefit from the choice of 130 British-built vehicles that ensure money is reinvested into the manufacturing sector and local communities, where they support skilled jobs and apprenticeships at our own facilities as well as in our extensive supply chain.”

Frank Thorpe, Managing Director, BYD UK said: “The issue of climate change is one that requires immediate action. We believe that this arrangement is a positive, more viable way forward for many public transport operators to swiftly integrate and transition to zero-emission pure-electric bus solutions. National Express has first-hand experience operating BYD ADL eBuses, which utilise BYD’s pioneering battery and integrated electronic technology. With a longstanding knowledge of the UK market, BYD is especially proud to be involved in this project, which is setting a precedent for a new way of accelerating and financing eMobility for a better, greener world.”

Making transition more financially desirable

Steven Meersman, Co-founder and Director of Zenobē, said: “This really is a globally important deal. We are incredibly excited to be leading the way for the electric bus industry, with ETaaS revolutionising the way fleets are electrified. By retaining ownership of the vehicles and taking on the risk of switching to zero-emission, we are giving National Express the use of an electric bus fleet without the hassle of owning one, making the transition to a zero-emission fleet more financially desirable. We’re excited to use our new model to help many more operators and local authorities across the UK – and the world – transition to electric, and ultimately accelerate progress towards net zero and clean air.”

Tom Stables, CEO of National Express UK and Germany, said: “This ground-breaking partnership with Zenobe further demonstrates our leadership as National Express takes another significant step towards our fully zero emission bus fleet ambition. Through this pioneering new way of working, Zenobe’s innovative solution provides us with the reliability and flexibility we need to accelerate the roll-out of our greener, cleaner vehicles, while we focus on delivering an excellent service for the people of Coventry. Buses are already one of the cleanest ways to travel. National Express is making it even cleaner, cheaper and easier, so our new and existing customers can relax knowing that they are doing their bit for the planet if they leave the car at home and travel by bus.”

A fleet of ADL – BYD zero emission buses for Glasgow Airport. Three battery buses are in operation since a few days as long stay car park shuttles.

The investment makes Glasgow Airport the first in the UK to switch its official car park shuttles to all-electric operation. The buses are operated by NCP on behalf of the airport and replace three existing diesel buses.

Today, ADL – BYD also announced the delivery of 22 new battery buses to Transport for London operator Go-Ahead London. The buses are now in service on route 214 between Highgate, Camden Town, King’s Cross and the City.

Transport Scotland supported the investment

Buses and the charging infrastructure have been supplied by Alexander Dennis and its partner BYD. Their introduction has been supported by Transport Scotland with a £450,000 Green Bus Fund grant.

The BYD ADL Enviro200EV for Glasgow Airport combine BYD’s electric driveline and battery technology with Alexander Dennis bodies adapted to the requirements of airport operation. 10.8m long and fitted with two doors, the buses have three-tier luggage racking in addition to 23 seats. A wheelchair space is provided opposite the rear doors.

Charging infrastructure for the buses has been installed at their operating base in the airport’s long stay car park. Alexander Dennis, BYD and the partnership’s utilities partner conducted a site survey to ensure that the installation and commissioning process was smooth and quick.

Battery buses, a role to play in the airports

Mark Johnston, Glasgow Airport’s Managing Director, says: “We are proud to be the first airport in the UK to incorporate a full-electric bus fleet into our car park operation. These state-of-the-art vehicles will play an important role in supporting our continued efforts to create a more sustainable business and will contribute significantly to help further reduce carbon emissions locally at Glasgow Airport. The environmental benefits and considerable cost reductions associated with the introduction of these electric vehicles was very attractive. Moving to a full-electric bus operation cuts the carbon emissions associated with passenger travel to and from our car park from 143 tonnes per year to zero, and this significant reduction is further supported by the fact that the airport’s electricity is also supplied via renewable energy.”

Colin Robertson, ADL Chief Executive, comments: “Glasgow Airport’s decision to electrify its official car park shuttles shows that battery buses have an important role to play at airports. We are delighted to have used our expertise in adapting buses to specific operational requirements on these environmentally-friendly vehicles. It is great to see Glasgow Airport leading the charge with pure electric buses.”

Frank Thorpe, Managing Director BYD UK, added: “Electric mobility is proven to be both safe and reliable, with BYD pioneering the technology in markets in the UK and across Europe. Electric mobility provides the ideal solution to a wide range of passenger transport requirements with benefits for Local Authorities, operators, passengers and, of course, the environment.”

ADL will supply six electric buses in New Zealand, powered with BYD technology. They’ll be the new variant of the Enviro200EV with a lenght of 11.6 meter, recently announced. The buses will be delivered in mid-2020 to Fullers360, and will mean the beginning of the conversion of bus services on Waiheke Island to a zero emission operation.

ADL in May 2019 has been taken over by the Canadian group New Flyer Industries (Nfi) for 405 million dollars (some 360 million euros). But the novelty doesn’t affect the cooperation between ADL and BYD on electric buses.

Further 5 electric buses to be added

The new electric buses will be operated by Fullers360 subsidiary Waiheke Bus Company on behalf of transport authority Auckland Transport (AT). The company has plans to add a further five electric buses later, cutting out emissions from the entire AT Waiheke Island bus network, which connects communities with Fullers360’s frequent ferries to Auckland. The order follows the successful trial of two BYD ADL Enviro200EV across the Auckland Transport network since 2018.

First order for the new Enviro200EV variant

The battery buses will be built to the new length of 11.6m, recently announced by Alexander Dennis and its partner BYD. The new model maximises the use of available space to offer two additional seats as well as increased legroom, the manufacturer highlights. Passengers benefit from full air conditioning, while drivers will enjoy improved handling characteristics thanks to a shorter rear overhang.

LFP batteries for ADL BYD buses in New Zealand

Fullers360 Chief Executive Officer Mike Horne says: “With Auckland Transport’s support, Fullers360 and Waiheke Bus Company are proud to lead a significant reduction in road emissions on Waiheke Island. As we revamp our fleet with new electric vehicles, the buses will continue to play an important role in connecting the Waiheke community to Matiatia Wharf and destinations across the island.”

Tony Moore, General Manager of Alexander Dennis New Zealand, says: “This is a fantastic continuation of the work Auckland Transport is doing to reduce emissions across the region as part of its Low Emission Bus Roadmap. Alexander Dennis would like to thank Fullers360 for this vote of confidence in our buses and we look forward to transforming Waiheke Island’s bus services.”

Wing You, BYD’s General Manager for Australia and New Zealand, says: “BYD’s latest iron phosphate battery technology (editor’s note: LFP formula is typical of Chinese market, while Western countries are more likely to adopt NMC batteries) powers reliable electric buses around the world. By combining our chassis with market-leading bodywork from Alexander Dennis, we are able to give Fullers360 and Auckland Transport a pure electric, zero emission bus that exactly meets their requirements.”

Zero emission mode in the city centre, diesel powered for the rest of the route. The British manufacturer Alexander Dennis delivered 30 new hybrid buses to Brighton & Hove (they will start operations in October). They are equipped with BAE Systems’ series hybrid technology.

These vehicles will set a very first in the UK: in fact the buses will be converted in full electric every time they enter the city Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ), according to the practice called geofencing that for the first time has been combined with zero emissions technology in the UK.

Brighton & Hove Buses is part of the Go-Ahead group, which set the goal of operating a zero-emissions fleet nationwide by 2035. So far, Go-Ahead operates the UK’s largest all-electric bus garage, in London’s Waterloo.

alexander dennis hybrid bus

ADL and BAE Systems technology

The Enviro400ER buses, equipped with BAE Systems’ series hybrid technology, are moved via an electric drivetrain and can run for up to three miles in electric mode, according to the manufacturer. BAE Systems and ADL have been working together since 2008. BAE Systems technology is mounted also on Nova Bus vehicles for TTC Toronto.

The buses run on batteries (32 kWh on board), topped up via regenerative braking and a small Euro VI engine used as a generator, if needed, when the bus is outside the zone. They don’t need to recharge in the middle of the day. This keeps buses in service and eliminates the need for the city to invest in charging stations.

The Enviro400ERs don’t have mirrors but instead have two high-definition cameras on the front, relaying pictures to monitors inside the driver’s cab.

7.6 million people a year on ruote 5 in Brighton

The new vehicles purchased by Brighton & Hove Buses are model Alexander Dennis Enviro400ER and belongs to the hybrid electric range. The new buses will be launched in October on busy route 5, which is used by 7.6 million people a year and equates to 133,104 emissions-free miles driven in the ULEZ each year. Up to 24 route 5 buses an hour run through the zone.

Brighton & Hove Buses, a new environmental campaign

The Enviro400ERs stand out from the rest of the fleet, mirroring the colours of Brighton: the midnight-blue silhouetted skyline, the dark teal of the sea and the iconic pale green of the city’s seaside arches, the manufacturer underlines.

The buses mark the start of the bus company’s wider community environmental campaign, Live & Breathe, which appears on the side of each bus. The campaign will include a stakeholders’ tour on the new buses in mid-October, a school competition with a climate change theme and other local events.

Brighton & Hove Buses’ Managing Director Martin Harris said: “We wanted these buses to reflect the city and the communities they serve. It’s a tribute to Brighton life and to the people who live here. Our aim is to help improve air quality for everybody by continually cutting emissions and reducing our energy and fuel use. These new buses are an important part of our commitment to making Brighton & Hove a clean air city with zero emissions by 2030.”

Go-Ahead Chief Executive David Brown said: “Go-Ahead is proud to be leading the way on clean transport and this innovation moves us closer to our goal of operating a zero-emissions fleet nationwide by 2035. A double decker bus can take as many as 75 cars off the roads in our cities and towns, so when it comes to improving the air quality and congestion in our cities buses are a vital part of the solution, especially with vehicles that can be set to run in zero-emissions mode in sensitive areas like these.”

The 11 meter electric bus by BYD and ADL gets an upgrade. This is what the two companies announced today. The new Enviro200EV family will features a new ADL heat pump and optimised vehicle layouts.

ADL in May 2019 has been taken over by the Canadian group New Flyer Industries (Nfi) for 405 million dollars (some 360 million euros). But the novelty doesn’t affect the cooperation between ADL and BYD on electric buses.

The new Enviro200EV family

BYD and ADL produce jointly electric buses for UK market since 2015. Now the partnership will upgrade the BYD ADL Enviro200EV single decker to the new vehicle lengths of 10.9m (replacing the current 10.8m model) and 11.6m (offering two extra seats over the current 12m model, which it replaces).

The buses will utilise ADL’s new all-electric heating system for electric buses, the companies underline. This heat pump solution has been developed to transfer atmospheric heat in to the vehicle. Designed to run efficiently in low ambient temperatures, it can also be used in reverse to cool the vehicle during warmer weather. The high efficiency of the system enables additional operational range, according to BYD and ADL.

BYD – ADL electric bus, orders from UK and New Zealand

The upgrade brings the buses in line with the shorter, 10.2m and 9.6m versions of the BYD ADL Enviro200EV as well as the double deck BYD ADL Enviro400EV, all of which have been introduced to the market in 2019. Orders for the upgraded models have been taken from operators in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, taking the total number of BYD ADL electric buses delivered or on order to 412.

A new step for the partnership

Isbrand Ho, Managing Director of BYD Europe, says in this regards: “Here we see yet another example of the close collaboration between BYD and ADL; bringing together its industry-leading resources to develop an exacting specification that benefits UK bus operators and their passengers. I’m pleased to see more and more public transport operators in the UK adopting BYD ADL as an electric mobility solution.”

Colin Robertson, ADL Chief Executive, comments: “Our partnership continues to go from strength to strength as bus operators choose reliability and best-in-class support. With this upgrade to the BYD ADL Enviro200EV single decker, we are building even more strongly on ADL’s unrivalled experience in designing buses that maximise efficiency, capacity and passenger comfort.”

Alexander Dennis’s story as an independent bus builder has come to an end. The British company, the world’s leading manufacturer of double decker buses, has been taken over by the Canadian group NFI for 405 million dollars (some 360 million euros).

The operation aims to “create a market-leading global bus and coach manufacturer with market leading positions in the United Kingdom, North America and Hong Kong plus a growing footprint elsewhere in Asia Pacific, Latin America and Europe” says Alexander Dennis.

NFI strengthens the portfolio, with ADL

Among the advantages of the acquisition, NFI highlights two aspects. First, ADL’s know-how in the field of double-decker buses. Secondly, the expansion of the product portfolio offered by the two companies together. “ADL enhances NFI’s technical competencies on lightweight chassis and bodies – the group underlines -. NFI’s electric vehicle experience will enhance ADL’s international EV offering and ensure both companies drive the future of clean transportation. The combined NFI and ADL business creates the strongest customer offering in North America with the widest range of buses and unrivalled aftermarket support”.

In Europe, Alexander Dennis manufactures electric buses in cooperation with the Chinese giant BYD, which provides chassis and powertrain. New Flyer adopted on its range of battery electric buses (Xcelsior Charge) the ZF AxTrax electric axle (the same as for eCitaro and Urbino electric).

ADL maintains its brand name

Also: “ADL’s flexible operating model enables the business to enhance competitiveness in existing markets while entering new regions”.

The Scottish company says it will retain its brand in any case and its CEO Colin Robertson, who has led the growth and internationalization of the company in more than ten years. Chief Financial Officer Michael Stewart will also continue to lead ADL. They will also be responsible for driving the international growth ambitions of the NFI. The NFI Group employs over 6,300 people and has 74,000 buses running between Canada and the United States.

A joint venture in the past between the two companies

“The two companies share similar cultures and values in terms of quality and customer experience, as demonstrated in their previous joint venture in North America (an experience that lasted from 2012 to 2017 and aimed at the production of 9-meter and 10-meter buses in the Midi range) – the companies state -. There is a clear alignment in the management strategy, market prospects and expectations of adoption of electric vehicles. The aim is not to cut jobs or rationalise, but to focus on collaboration and sharing of best practice. ADL will continue to pursue its strategic plans.

NFI and the global dimension

“This is a transformational acquisition for NFI to become a global bus manufacturer,” said Paul Soubry, NFI’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “ADL is the UK’s number one bus manufacturer and the number one global producer of double-deck buses, with an established international presence and is recognized as a leader known for innovative products and a commitment to quality and service. We’re thrilled to have ADL join the NFI family in a transaction that we believe will drive our business forward by combining joint strengths in engineering, sales, new product development and manufacturing with NFI’s expertise in Operational Excellence, insourcing, fabrication and systems management.”

NFI Board Chairman Brian Tobin added: “ADL is a company we know very well, and this acquisition presents a compelling opportunity to make NFI a more diversified and robust business while creating immediate value for our shareholders. NFI’s management team has a track record of delivering accretive acquisitions and prudent capital management which we expect to continue through the addition of ADL.”

ADL Chief Executive, Colin Robertson, says: “We are incredibly proud of the growth and success we’ve had building Alexander Dennis over the past 15 years, and I’m excited to have the ADL team join NFI – one great bus company joining another. We believe our consolidated businesses will enhance NFI’s market leading position in North America, while improving NFI’s offering through combined engineering expertise, supplier partnerships, electric vehicle know-how and aftermarket platforms. I look forward to continuing our solid progress at ADL and also championing further international growth for NFI in coordination with Paul and his leadership team”.
